David is the Founder of The Hub Hong Kong, a children and youth centre that he and his Co-Founder Bruce Stinson, founded in Sham Shui Po in 2013. When he and Bruce went to visit some of the families living in Sham Shui Po back in 2012, they were shocked to see that despite Hong Kong’s wealth, there were over 200,000 children living below the poverty line. Having been a long-time Hong Konger, he wants to give back to this community where he lives in. Together with the Rotary Club of Kowloon North, they organized the first Charity Ball in June 2012, where they raised some money to open The Hub Children and Youth Centre in Sham Shui Po, and the premises has been there since.
The concept of The Hub Hong Kong is to enrich, embrace and empower disadvantaged children and youth with equal opportunities to overcome the poverty cycle and contribute to the community. The programs they offer range from academic support like daily homework guidance, language lessons, STEM, recreational activities like music, art, drama, sports to health and wellness, personal counselling and parenting. The Centre cares for a community of over 1,200 members annually, including children aged 6-18 and their parents. Through their services, kids benefit from improvement in academic performance, familial relationship, self-confidence, to a healthier and well-balanced lifestyle. Their aim is to give those kids support, give them exposure to the wider world and to provide the best chance possible for them to become the future hope of Hong Kong.
Growing up in Australia, David believes in the importance of giving back to the community. He began working with the Childline Foundation in Thailand and set up the first Hub to provide welfare and educational support for street children in Bangkok. In 2018, with the help of his wife, he set up another Hub in Yangon, trading as Shwe Ya Min Foundation to help support underprivileged children in Myammar. Their vocational training centre, recently opened on 1st August 2019, will empower teenage girls to become independent and help build a better future for their country. All the various Hubs share the same mission under one roof - The Hubs of Asia – to provide and serve children and youth who are living under disadvantaged circumstances, help them to break the poverty cycle and excel to pursue their dreams.
